Highlights between Tirano and St. Moritz

Brusio Circular Viaduct

Just minutes after Tirano, the line spirals through an open stone viaduct to gain altitude. A landmark of the Bernina line and one of the most photographed bridges in the Alps.

Lago di Poschiavo

A turquoise alpine lake between Le Prese and Miralago. The train hugs the shoreline for several kilometres — sit on the right side coming from Tirano for the best view.

Alp Grüm (2,091 m)

The first stop on the south side of the pass. Views of the Palü Glacier and a small mountain restaurant if you want to break the journey.

Lago Bianco & Ospizio Bernina (2,253 m)

The summit of the line and the European watershed. Glacier-fed Lago Bianco on one side, dark Lej Nair on the other. Snow on the embankments well into June.

Morteratsch Glacier

On the descent toward Pontresina the train passes directly below the Morteratsch Glacier and the Piz Bernina massif (4,049 m).

Before you book: 5 things to know

01

Bring your passport or ID

Tirano is in Italy, St. Moritz in Switzerland. The train crosses an EU/Schengen-to-Switzerland border. Carry photo ID — random checks happen, especially in summer.

02

Same route, same views — really

Both trains use the same tracks across the Bernina Pass. Booking the Red Train doesn't mean a worse view — the Bernina Express just adds panorama glass, at-seat catering, and a reserved seat.

03

Bernina Express reservation is separate

The "Bernina Express ticket" you see online sometimes only covers the seat reservation (CHF 32 for Tirano ↔ St. Moritz). Make sure you also have a valid train ticket — many bundles include both, some don't.

04

Which side of the train?

Coming from Tirano, sit on the right side for the Brusio viaduct and Lago di Poschiavo. From St. Moritz, sit on the left for the same views.

05

A day trip works — round-trip in ~4 h 40

Tirano ↔ St. Moritz is the most popular section precisely because it fits in a day with time to walk around St. Moritz, Pontresina or back in Tirano. A round-trip Red Train ticket is valid all day on any train.

Frequently asked questions

Bernina Express or Red Train (Trenino Rosso) — what's the difference?
They run on the same tracks across the Bernina Pass and have the same views. The Bernina Express is the panorama-glass train: 1–3 departures per day, mandatory seat reservation, at-seat catering, Wi-Fi. The Red Train is the regional train: runs hourly, no reservation needed, normal windows that open, no on-board service. The Red Train ticket is valid all day on any train in the same direction.
Do I need a seat reservation?
For the Bernina Express, yes — it's mandatory and booked separately. The reservation costs CHF 32 per person for Tirano ↔ St. Moritz year-round. For the Red Train, no reservation is required. You can optionally reserve a seat for CHF 5, but most travellers don't.
How much does the ticket cost?
Official RhB price for a one-way ticket St. Moritz ↔ Tirano in 2nd class is CHF 33. A round-trip is CHF 66. The Bernina Express adds the mandatory seat reservation (CHF 32). Online resellers price in EUR and bundle reservation + ticket — compare the totals.
Do I need my passport?
Yes — bring photo ID. The train crosses an international border between Italy and Switzerland. Border checks are random but do happen, especially during the summer season.
Can I get off and continue on a later train?
With the Red Train ticket: yes — it's valid all day on any Red Train in the same direction, so you can break the journey at Poschiavo, Alp Grüm, or anywhere along the line. With the Bernina Express: no — you're tied to the train and seat you booked.
Do the trains run in winter?
Yes, both year-round. The Bernina Express uses panoramic carriages all year, with a reduced winter schedule. Note: from 29 October to 13 November 2026 the Bernina Express is rerouted via Vereina due to engineering works — check rhb.ch for affected dates.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes. Small dogs travel free in a carrier. Larger dogs need a dog ticket (half the adult fare on RhB). On the Bernina Express the reservation fee applies in full.
