About this tour

This guided day trip is designed for travellers who want to experience the Bernina Range without organising trains, tickets and connections themselves. A live guide travels with you on the coach and on the train, sharing context about the landscape, the railway, and the towns along the way.

The day begins early at Milano Centrale, where you meet the guide and group, get a radio earpiece and board the coach. About 1 hour 30 minutes north, the coach makes a short coffee stop at Colico Piano before continuing into the Valtellina valley to Tirano on the Italian-Swiss border. You have roughly 45 minutes in Tirano for a walk and a quick lunch before boarding the train.

The Bernina Red Train climbs out of Tirano through the Brusio Spiral Viaduct, along Lago di Poschiavo, past Alp Grüm with its view of the Palü Glacier, and over the Bernina Pass at 2,253 metres. About 2 hours 30 minutes later you arrive in St. Moritz. The train is the regional Red Train (Trenino Rosso) with windows you can open for photos — the same route as the panoramic Bernina Express, with more flexibility and no glare.

You have around 1 hour 30 minutes of free time in St. Moritz to walk along the lake, find lunch or a coffee at altitude. The coach then takes you back to Milan via the Maloja Pass, arriving at Milano Centrale around 20:30. The full day runs about 11 hours.
